These mountains were where Lord Shiva lived before Vishnu came for penance and decided to stay. He disguised himself as a beautiful child and began wailing. The child's screams disturbed Shiva and exasperated, he left for Kedarnath. Shiva's influences remained in the region, especially in its name Badri.
